One late Shanti Ranjan Chakraborty of village Akrampur (Habra) who went to Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry for the first time from this locality to have a Darshan of the Mother on August 15, 1954. On his return, late Bhupesh Sen of Ashoknagar met him to know about Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and also about Ashram’s activities. Both of them were fully inspired to participate with the ideals of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. With this intention, on 19.12.1954, a film show on the activities of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry was organised at the Habra Rupkatha Cinema Hall. There was such an overwhelming response from the huge public during the show, that the owner of the Hall had to open all the doors of the Hall for the public. Seeing such an unexpected response from the common men, both Shanti Ranjan Chakraborty and Bhupesh Sen inspired to start a centre namely “Sri Aurobindo Karmi Sangha”. This name was given by late Promod Sen, editor “Srinvantu” who was an eloquent speaker also.
Finally, Sri Aurobindo Karmi Sangha was inaugurated on 21st February, 1955 by lighting up the lamp in the presence of a few youths in a rented house near Jessore Road and Habra Railway Station, and the Sangha had set in its journey. The speakers of the inaugural function were late Promod Sen and Manibishnu Chowdhury. The main organisers were Shanti Ranjan Chakraborty and Bhupesh Sen. At that time, Shri Gobindalal Chakraborty was present there as a School Student. By now , the Karmi Sangha has already completed sixty six years of it’s journey.
